EAST LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) – From setting the program’s single-season scoring record to qualifying for the US Open, it’s been a whirlwind of a year for Michigan State senior golfer Ashton McCulloch.
As he settles into his senior season in the green and white, he sat down with the MSU Federal Credit Union Coaches Show to discuss his growth from a young star to a senior leader for the program.
“I’ve always kind of felt like the young kid on the team,” he said. “Even last year being a junior we still had three seniors on the team that have always played since I’ve been here. So I still felt like that young kid on the team just hanging out with my older friends and trying to compete with them. So now it’s obviously different. This past week we had three freshmen in the field, a sophomore and a transfer.
“So, it was a really new team and [I’m] trying to be that leader on and off the golf course. Trying to show the guys what it’s like to be a student at Michigan State along with what it’s like to be a collegiate golfer is definitely tough but it’s something that I love doing.”
While McCulloch is embracing the opportunity to teach and lead others, he hasn’t lost sight of the self-reliance that attracted him to golf in the first place.
